Setting up your modem for your Apple Mac/iMac

In the majority of cases, your Apple Mac/iMac computer should already be setup correctly with its modem enabling you to successfully use your i12 account. Please read the following steps however, if your modem is not functioning correctly, or you simply want to make sure that everything is setup correctly.

To identify any potential faults with your modem, you will need an application called AppleWorks or ClarisWorks, depending on the version of your operating system. The following steps assume you have ClarisWorks installed on your Apple Mac/iMac.

To start the ClarisWorks program double-click on the hard drive on your Desktop, and then open the Applications folder. Then double-click on the ClarisWorks folder and then double-click again on the on the ClarisWorks icon. When the program starts, it will greet you with the following:

Select Communications and click "ok".

Once you enter the terminal screen, you will need to make some changes to the default settings. Select settings from the menu, and click on "connection":

Now, select "Method" and choose "serial tool":

Check to make sure that the correct modem is highlighted, and click "ok".

On the menu bar select "Session", then click on "Open Connection". This will allow you to communicate with the modem. The modem does not connect to the phone line at this stage. Once connected you will see the timer starting to count, you are now ready to send commands directly to the modem.

Type "at" and press return. If everything is working as it should do, you should see an "ok" response. This means that the modem and the computer can communicate with one another.
